JMMF have recently contributed to a one-day meeting to produce consensus statements and recommendations regarding priorities for the implementation of optimal suicide prevention strategies. The consensus panel members comprised researchers, voluntary organisations, statutory providers and families bereaved by suicide. We discussed what is the gap between what is happening on the ground and optimal prevention strategies and what can be done to bridge the gap in the areas of communication, assessment, organisational structure and training. A final consensus statement that has been approved by all participants has now been issued. It is intended to be used as an adjunct to the Government’s National Suicide Prevention Strategy.

In July 2011, the Government published a draft suicide prevention strategy for England to replace the previous 10 year strategy. The document brings together knowledge about groups at higher risk of suicide, effective interventions and resources available and places a new emphasis on family members. Interested parties were asked to provide their feedback on the draft by October 2011. A copy of our submission is available here. The Judi Meadows Memorial Fund also contributed to a collaborative response from the Association of Suicide Charities (TASC).

The National Institute for Health Research has confirmed that we are a non-commercial partner. This means that appropriate research studies that we support are now automatically eligible for consideration for NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) support. They are also entitled to use the NIHR Coordinated System for gaining NHS Permissions (NIHR CSP) which is accessed via the Integrated Research Application System (IRAS). This is a significant advantage for those projects that satisfy the eligibility criteria of providing clear value to the NHS and involving NHS patients, staff, facilities or resources and that would benefit from NHS support. Being awarded non-commercial partner status is testament to the robust project selection criteria that we have in place. Further information about the NIHR CRM Portfolio is available at NIHR CRN Portfolio.
